Made in Toronto: Famous Films Shot in T-Dot

If Toronto were a girl, she would be pretty in the most conventional way: with only slight alterations, her mildly smiling face could easily assume the visage of a hundred other women. Variously, she could be dark and mysterious, light and angelic, or classic and traditional. She would be hated by her classmates (Montreal, Vancouver, we’re looking at you), but loved by the citizens of the world.

As an urban centre, Toronto’s mix of standard “every city” architecture and classic monuments make it a film-maker’s dream, and the versatility of this fair Canadian city has been exploited by several filmmakers. Here’s a list of some of our favourite films shot in Toronto:

Kick Ass

We recommend watching Kick Ass at the Scotiabank Theatre on Richmond St. in Toronto, as the theatre is featured in the film. Listening to recognition ripple through the crowd as the cinema comes on screen is an exciting meta-adventure. Also exciting: this film makes no attempt to mask its location, despite the story being set in New York. A Yonge St. joyride, King West alley fight, and a TTC station transformed into a high school are all notable Toronto highlights in this entertaining comic book movie. (credit: CP Images)

Hated by her Classmates? Come on!
Happy to Work
Ha! Toronto? "Hated by her classmates?" No, no, no.

Vancouver is the third largest centre for film production in N America with a 2009 spend of over $1.3 billion (Ontario had $946 million - less than 3/4 of that).

You had to go back to "Good Will Hunting" and "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" to highlight Toronto? Oh, please.

Maybe it's not that Toronto is hated by her classmates (which she certainly is not) but maybe just insecurely hates herself whenever she doesn't finish first-in-class. Pity.

Great post! The tag that made me read this attempts to appropriate Vancouver's "Hollywood North" nickname, which I found hilarious. What's the matter, Toronto, is "The Centre of the Universe" nickname upsetting you now because you finally realized it's facetious? And yeah, Toronto is more like that heinous girl in class who wears too much make up and sits around being catty towards the naturally beautiful students (Montreal, Vancouver, I'm looking at you) and is so self-absorbed that she doesn't realize that the rest of her classmates hate her because she's a rude, obnoxious, selfish jerk.

Vancouver very likable by film industry....
Extra Extra
With Vancouver having a big picture presence, Toronto should be jealious. To name just a few...V, Eureka, Smalleville, Stargate Atlantis, Cats&Dogs 1&2, Deck The Halls, Toothfairy, Charlie St Cloud, White Chicks, Adams Family show, Supernatural, A-Team movie, Fringe, Psych, Final Destncation series, Twilight series. WE are the true NORTH HOLLYWOOD. Just google it.

I don't think it's that other people hate Toronto. I don't and I've been there many times. In fact if I had to move, Toronto would be one of my top 10 picks in Canada.

I think the problem is that TO wants so bad to be the pretty important girl. It spends so much time telling everyone else it is pretty and important. "Oh we're the economic engine of Canada" (Not-true--Alberta.) "We're so cultural" (Not compared to Montreal). "We're Hollywood North" (if you exclude Vancouver).

T.O. should accept itself for what it is--a big average city. Like Atlanta, Buffalo, Detroit or Oakland . You're kind of like your hockey team--average...but full of self-importance.

The real pretty girls don't need to tell everyone how pretty and important they are...everyone already knows it.

What a load of shit
Vancouver rocks
Vancouver has be known as hollywood north for as long as I can remember. Granted Kick ass was a fantastic movie but if that's all t.o. has id rather refer to t.o. as ass kick as in t.o. gets it's ass kicked by Vancouver all the time !

It's interesting to see how people use articles like this to hate on Toronto. There's good and bad to every place. The thing is you'd never hear anyone in Toronto bad-mouthing other Canadian cities as much as others do.

Just stop.
Actually, it was the lead ARTICLE which first raised the issue of being hated by her classmates ("Montreal, Vancouver, we're looking at you").

The second post (by Happy to Work) also noted that no, Toronto is "certainly" NOT hated by her "classmates".

Maybe with a bit of an attitude adjustment, Toronto (along with the rest of us who admire success - no matter how small) could just celebrate its own little victories without having to also demand to be the centre of attention.

Or maybe we should just blame the writer of this silly little piece.

*sigh*

I agree with many posts on here - the writer is the one that brought up the concept of TO being "North Hollywood" and comparing it to high school. Just like in High School if you act smug, you will have to deal with critcism. As for the "oh stop ragging on OTO" I can tell you that as a French Quebecois from Quebec, there is a lot of trashing and racism made towards me and my province on these boards, simply because people have misconceptions about Quebec. Don't think TO is the only hated place in Canada.

The trick is to learn to deal with it and realize that small minded twits from all over the country like to brag about their city, yet are so insecure that they turn to attacks on others. As a citizen of Montreal, I can tell you that many movies are made here as well, TO Is not not the only city to attract movie makers. Mtl is used much more than TO when depicting Europe. Not saying either one is better, but the author should not have used the title "Northern Hollywood" - because that also includes Mtl and Van, N.Hlwd is CANADA not simply a city. Do a little research next time!

Insecurity
Fragile Ego's
I find it hilarious how insecure all of you posters are. I don't live in Toronto or any of the other major cities where movies are most often filmed, but why is everyone walking on such fragile ego's and trying to defend their city's film history? This is simply a list of one place, they will likely come out with others in the future! There is no point in "Ya? Well mines way better because...", its actually quite silly and I find these comments more comical than anything else.

Please people, work on your self-esteem issues and get rid of your ego's altogether while you're at it. I'm proud as a Canadian that we have a lot of movies being made at home, there's no point bickering about where.
