Jason Statham will step into Burt Reynolds' shoes for an upcoming remake of the 1986 crime drama Heat, with Brian De Palma on board to direct.

Industry trade magazine Variety reports that the Expendables and Crank star will play Nick, a former gambler turned bodyguard for hire who turns his trade in the murky world of Las Vegas gamblers.

What makes Nick different is his refusal to use guns, preferring instead to get by with his wits, his fists and a couple of trusty knives. But when an old pal is nearly beaten to death by a mobster, Nick vows vengeance setting off an action-packed adventure deep in the heart of sin city.

Famed Hollywood writer William Goldman wrote the original screenplay based on his 1985 novel. Word is the scribe is now back on board to pen the remake, updating his story for the modern day.

As well as starring in the flick, Statham will also act as one of the movie's producers.

Statham fans have plenty to look forward to in 2012. The brawny star will next flex his muscles in the upcoming action-thriller Safe before re-teaming with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the eagerly anticipated Expendables 2.
