Naomi Watts will star as the beautiful Princess Diana in an upcoming biopic about the tragic royal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the British-Australian actress has signed on to play Diana, Princess of Wales in Caught In Flight.

Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel from a script by Stephen Jeffreys, the big screen drama will chronicle the last two years of Diana's life as she began searching for ways to use her royal power to benefit others through philanthropy and as a spokesperson for human rights issues.

Watts told THR that it's "an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."

Downfall director Hirschbiegel says that he cast Watts for the role because he believes the actress has "the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."

In the meantime, fans of Watts can look forward to next seeing her co-starring with Ewan McGregor in the tsunami drama The Impossible.
