Whitney Houston's final movie performance will hit screens on August 17.

Houston, who died suddenly on Saturday (February 11) at the age of 48, will appear in Sparkle, which is a remake of the 1976 movie of the same name. Houston also served as an executive producer on the project, according to Variety.

Sparkle, like Dreamgirls, is based on the story of the Supremes. Houston plays Emma, the mother of three sisters who form a singing group and find themselves struggling to cope with fame. The ensemble cast includes Jordin Sparks, Mike Epps and Derek Luke.

Houston also recorded several songs for the soundtrack, which features original music by R. Kelly.

Variety reports that Sony is not expected to change its release plan for the pic. The studio released a statement on Saturday, saying, 'Like all those who knew and loved her, we are shocked and saddened and the world has lost an incomparable talent. Right now our thoughts are with her daughter, her family and her friends.'

Houston's last movie appearance was in 1996's The Preacher's Wife. She previously appeared in The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale.

Sparkle producer Curtis Wallace told the Detroit News that working with Houston was a pleasure. 'She started to take on a mother-type role, especially with Jordin,' he said. 'She was spending time with her and giving her advice.

'I was surprised at how funny she was. I remember how much fun she was to be around on set. One night, like many, we were working late, it was 2 or 3 a.m. and she was making up songs getting everyone laughing.'
