When it comes to casting, historical films present a unique challenge. History is often made by average looking people, but you can't put an average looking person in the lead role of a major film without jeopardizing the film's box office potential. The solution: hire a glamourous movie star, then 1) use make-up and prosthetics to make their performance more realistic or 2) simply pretend that the historical figure in question was above average looking to begin with.
